For me, the biggest challenge of leading is not to maintain the standard. Leader is not a people who sit in the existing system and let it be. That's a job for manager. Most leaders in the world who are categorized as "leaders", even though their characteristics are not good. Julius Caesar was a great leader in Rome but he was obsessive for power. Adolf Hitler was a leader but the World War 2 he was showed as the real-life devil. Abdullah Badawi is a leader but being criticized as soft and weak. George Bush is a leader who crowned as "war-maniac". The history shows us how can leaders and be a bad asses, a looser, or a maniac, but they still called as leader and their leadership will be study through generation. Why? This is because they stood up for a change. Leaders are not walk in and maintain, they pursuit further and greater dreams and visions. But their dreams and visions sometime only can achieve thru change. Yes, CHANGE.
Obeying the existing system will not guarantee a future of a nation, or society. It can be easy for us to maintain the current status, make us comfortable because it already part of us. We do that in routine basis, we teach the next generation about it, we label it as “culture”, and we live in it comfortable. But is we just hang on a system for too long, we cannot improve because a system can outdated. If the system cannot match with current trend, people in it will separate with the real world. If this happen, people will not improve and will leave to find a better system to live in. those who left behind will continue live in a delusion that they can move on but soon they will degrade and vanish in the history. Every system had it’s time frame. A new system will starts with trial period, adopted period, peak, and finally fading period. Each period will pushing the level of cognition to the higher level which will encourage thinking, and bring out creativity. But when come to peak, it will slowly stop because the “new” ideas eventually run dry. Finally, there will be no improvement and everything will go downward. When it goes downward, people won’t see improvement and so will de-motivate them. It shows when people start to lay-back, refuse to think, or start to act ignorance. If this happen, change is a must in order to put back the morale in to the people. Julius Caesar changed the Rome into a strong military country, Hitler strengthens Germany as a strong and wealthy nation after World War I, Abdullah open the doorway of juristic revolution (still wondering how history judge Bush).
My leadership challenge is handling a cracking youth ministry. A ministry which has a system that last for 10 years, but now it shows that it cannot holds the ministry any longer. People is giving up, de-motivate, relationship broken, therefore it’s time to change. I don’t know how, I have a plan, but I just don’t know what the consequences are. It can go better or worse. But, if I don’t bring change it will surely be a goner. Now the change has come and the ball rolled under my feet. Reform is here, people demanding it; change is here, people need it. So year 2009, let the YOUTH REFORMATION begins.
